Bhapa Chingri (Steamed Prawn) is a traditional Bengali Recipes.
It can be said that one of the best steamed recipes among all the Bengali steamed Recipes.
Not only Bengali, people who like to eat Prawns will also
love this Recipe.
Ingredients
for Bhapa Chingri for 3 to 4 people
- 200 to 300 gm Prawns (Chingri ).
- Mustard paste ( Shorse bata) – 3 tsp
- Poppy Seed pate (Posto bata) – 1 tsp
- Ginger and garlic paste ( ada roson bata) - ½ tsp
- Mustard oil ( Shorse tail) – 4-5 tsp
- Soyanbean or Rice bran oil – 2 tsp
- Turmeric powder (holud ghudo)– 1 tsp
- Green Chilli ( kacha lonka) – 3-4
- Salt – as required
- Red chill (launka ghudo) – 1/4 tsp ( optional)
Steps to prepare Steamed Prawns ( Bhapa Chingri)
A) First of
all clean prawns ( Chingri ) as also shown in below pic .

B) Make paste of Mustard Seed, poppy seeds & Green Chilli , quantity mentioned
in ingredients .Use
less water for preparation of mustard paste paste , ( poppy seeds is used to
decrease the pungent ( Jhaj) taste of
mustard and Always use less green chilli as
mustard is
little bit pungent.
C) Take a container with lid ( steel tiffin box )
take prawns ( chingri) , mustard oil ,
very little red chilli powder, salt , mustard and poppy seed paste and mix well all the ingredients
After mixing all the ingredients for steaming , you can steam in various ways as mentioned below

It can be steamed in double boiler , steam for
15 – 20 min .

If don’t have double boiler , take a bowl pour some
water in it and put the Tiffin in to it , make sure that water level should be
below Tiffin’s lid and steam for 15 to 20 min.
3. You can use a pressure cooker, take water below
the Tiffin’s lid and give one whistle, turn off gas and wait for some time then
open the cooker.

Here I have steamed it in a glass during
preparation of rice in a big bowl and steamed for 20 to 25 min.
How you can check
your Bhapa Chingri is cooked or not
If the Prawns are tender then it is cooked if not tender you
can continue the process for 5 min
more.
Serve hot with
Rice and enjoy your Bhapa Chingri or Steamed Prawns.
